Preliminary Task Video

Evaluation

In the creation of my video I went out and shot my video in the canteen of college with my actors who were Demi Wrenn and Ollie Dwyer. I thought the filming went okay and I was done within half and hour. I then went back to the media room and watched over each of my clips. Unfortunately, I realized my initial conversation parts were too quiet and it was barely audible, therefore I had to recoup my actors and go back to the canteen to shoot again. This time I got them to speak louder, and they had to speak even louder because people had came to the canteen. With this filming I acknowledged the volume of their voices as I didn't want to have to come back and shoot again as I wanted to begin my editing properly.  I then came back to the media room and watched over the clips and they were as good as they was going to get with the volume the canteen was at already. I then uploaded the new videos to imovie and begun to make my video again, I didn't bother trimming the video length as I didnt feel it was important.

I added the music of Justin Bieber by youtube converting it to itunes and then adding it via itunes, I then dubbed the volume of the clips where there was no one speaking so it sounded more professional. I then muted the volume of the music which was over the clips on the clips which had speech so it was audible and I showed conversation.

I then added credits to my movie, starting with the title screen and then ending with the various credits which labelled the actors, film crew and actors.

Overall I think this went well, however to improve I would check over my footage before returning. Also I think I could of done the editing better and perhaps made the music flow better, however due to not actually getting marks for the quality of this work, I wasn't overly bothered as I wanted to get it done quickly so I could work on my actual task and make that really good.

I think what I did well was bettering my knowledge of credits and therefore creating the credits in this preliminary task was a lot easier than the first time I made credits, I achieved this by looking at movie credits, however I think personally I could still improve on this by perhaps using livetype for my credits on my main coursework and researching credits even further as I am still not 100% but as I already said, I wasn't overly trying hard with this preliminary task.

Initial thoughts on film opening

For my coursework I have been instructed to create a film opening which is accompanied by credits, my genre which I have chosen is horror and to create a good film opening I will look at other horror movies film openings and note the conventions which can be used within my film opening.

In the IT film opening:

  • The director
  • The title of the film
  • Music which contains no music and is categorised to be scary
  • The actors names
  • Instead of actual moving image, photos of children are used in the opening sequence which makes you wonder why, and it builds suspense
  • Who the music is by is listed
  • The scene switches to present tense
  • The music continues
  • The directors name of photography is listed
  • Dark clouds cast over which is typical for being spooky
  • There is a thunder storm with lightening which is scary due to the flashes of light in darkness
  • Production Designer name is listed
  • Wind indicating coldness and therefore suggesting to stay inside
  • Rain which again indicates to stay inside
  • Supervising advisor listed
  • Music continues

Live Type

Today I used Live Type for the first time and created two titles, the first was of my prelim tasks name and the second was an establishment of the end and who the movie was by. My first video went better than my second as with the second when I uploaded it to youtube the text came out black and practically invisible making it very hard to read, however I did the second one with much more speed than the first so I knew there was bound to be errors. I have learn for the future to not rush when using a new programme and to make sure a few times that the title is fine, when it comes to my actual preliminary task and putting it all together I will make sure a few times when I upload it and I will check when it is uploaded again to ensure it has came out the way I expected.

I liked using Live Type and I liked experimenting with it, which I believe is the best way to learn something. Overall I think it is a useful programme and I am glad I have learnt to use it early on before my actual coursework as I now know what I am doing and it will be much easier and quicker when I come to coursework.

Preliminary Task Idea - Friends?

Evaluation

Today I shot still photos which represented the ideas for my preliminary task, even with creating the still photos I made a few mistakes. For example, I did not take enough photos to demonstrate how my video may go, also some of the photos that I took did not flow onto the other pictures. An example of this is when I used the picture of the girl (Sophie) looking in the mirror and the the next picture was her hand on the door handle. To make this better I would involve a picture which showed her moving towards the door with a shot of the full door and her walking to it and the perhaps a picture of her reaching for the door (of just her arm) and then the picture of her hand on the door handle.

I think the music used demonstrated my idea quite well. Sophie is seen wiping her face, which looks like she is clearing her face of tears, she then walks out of the toilet and walks over to the other girl (Taylor). When sitting down she leaves a seat in between so there is space, which looks like they are trying to keep space between them, indicating that perhaps they aren't friendly towards each other. I think I would change the smile on Sophie's face when the master shot is used (of both the girls and establishing the place of where the scene will take place and where all action in this scene will be happen) as it is out of character and doesn't fit the context. I think the music benefited and helped enforce the context as you can create the assumption that they aren't friends because perhaps there has been cheating going on "I'm begging of you please don't take my man". However the assumption is given that they were friends prior to the incident as they seem comfortable around each other due to the way the are sitting, it isn't formal as if they don't know each other or have never met. I think I did well by choosing the music which in a way explained the idea of my preliminary task narrative.

I struggled with the creating the credits as I wasn't sure how to create them, to improve next time when actually creating my preliminary task video I will watch film credits prior to understand the convergence, as I was confused of which category the directors and producers fell under, therefore I think i need to specifically watch a few ending credits of films on YouTube and just see the convergence between them and incorporate that in my work.

Overall I think that my photo's represented my idea for my preliminary task  very well (obviously there were faults that I will improve on with future tasks) and I think my video was good, I think for a first attempt it was a good try and I will learn from my mistakes that I have made.
